Aqua Fria,
The bible of these books is "Applied River Morphology" by Rosgen. Full of glorious color photos & color illustrations... my memory is that the book goes for around $90. Lots of dough, but there's nothing similar.
The only thing I know of for the "layman" is a recent book, "Stream Dynamics for the Complete Fly Fisherman" by Bob Miller (WhiteFish Press). It's a good & inexpensive read.

Wicked cool stuff here Adam. Makes me miss public lands and my Gazetteer from Oregon. Never picked up a TX one, and my old one is in good hands (as are the notes on the little blue lines...)
I use my Garmin every other day, at least. It's an old 60CS that has literally been 'round the world with me. It's on my bike, and I have trails and a small stream close by the house.
